Context

Tammey’s team were invited by the Omani National Youth Committee (which was later merged under the Ministry of Culture, Sport & Youth) to lead a participatory process of developing a modern guidebook to:

  1. Guide and empower young Omani’s who are interested in designing and implementing social initiatives both on theoretical and practical aspects.
  2. Elevate the success and sustainability of existing and emerging social initiatives.
  3. Establish and enhance trust-based communication and relationships between young volunteers and governmental and non-governmental organizations in Oman.

Content

The guidebook was developed based on two essential frameworks:

  1. The Integrative Approach that emphasizes the different aspects of a young person’s development (psychological, social, professional, civil, religious, emotional, cognitive)
  2. Principles of Positive Youth Development which go beyond the traditional approach to young people as a “beneficiary” or a “vulnerable group” that needs help, to treating them as bearers of the right to participate in solving their issues and directing their lives with their growing potential and capacities.

Tammey’s team were invited again shortly after the guidebook was approved and published to facilitate a training workshop on the guidebook and its accompanying tools.

Key stakeholders from the committee attended the workshop. See short video from the workshop below.

Impact

The guidebook was extremely well-received by all stakeholders, including Omani youth and key activists in the volunteering ecosystem.

4 years later, in 2022, we heard mentions of the guidebook as being a cornerstone in the Omani volunteering ecosystem, so we interviewed Moammad Al-Maktoumi, the manager of the Youth Department in the Ministry of Culutre, Sports & Youth, to hear more about that.

Al-Maktoumi emphasized how the guidebook was utilized in a variety of ways since then and proved to be very potent.

The guidebook successfully achieved its goals of giving management in the ministry and trainers in the sector a theoretical framework to work from, and empowering young volunteers with a practical reference. We feel we were successful in choosing Tammey as regional consultants who brought a different perspective to our tables. We also felt the immense benefit of having a live workshop with them because their impact on employees and volunteers was profound and lasts till this day. The guidebook attracted the attention of other Khaliji countries who are interested into developing it into a guide for all Khaliji countries.

The success of this guidebook was a key reason why we were invited again in 2022 by the Omani Ministry of Culture, Sports & Youth to develop a second guidebook for young volunteers.
