Developing the National State of Youth Report for Sudan

A participatory research journey intended as a step on the path of developing a national youth policy

Client:
UNFPA Sudan
Country:
Sudan
Year:
2022
Staus:
Pending

Context

This project is a response to developments dating back to 2018 when UNESCO started advising the Sudanese Government to develop a National Youth Policy. After the prolonged political unrest in Sudan, which interrupted the process of NYP development several times already, Tammey's team developed a position paper suggesting that UN agencies pivot their efforts aiming to the development of a NYP to a bottom-up approach. UNFPA endorsed this recommendation and allocated resources to develop a National State of Youth Report in cooperation with Tammey and the Sudanese Population Network.

Methodology

Tammey proposed a methodology of a Research Journey (to be detailed later here)

Outcome

  1. The project team conducted an extensive selection & training process to develop the team of young researchers to be involved in the research project. The process utilized our online learning platform and a live workshop conducted in Khartoum in 2022.
  2. A comprehensive survey was developed during the training workshop in partnership between Tammey, UNFPA staff & the young participants, resulting in a high level of engagement and commitment to the project by all participants.
  3. A detailed stakeholder analysis consisting of several interviews with key informants.
  4. A mapping of macro programs targeting youth that relied on a questionnaire, a mapping of macro programs targeting youth and FGDs with relevant SHs from different sectors.
  5. The mission was interrupted before continuing the main data collection processes because of of the extreme security conditions caused by the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
